PPE Reading Lists

Welcome Letter from PPE Tutors

Dear freshers,

Welcome to Lincoln!

We hope you will find the College and Oxford to be an exciting, stimulating and supportive environment to study in over the next three years. We are writing to you now with some information about the PPE course and what to expect in your first year of study.

As you may already know, the first year is a very busy one for PPE students at Oxford. You will undertake modules in all three of the subjects, culminating in the Preliminary Examination (“Prelims”) next June. In the upcoming year, the Economics teaching will be focused on microeconomics, macroeconomics and quantitative methods. The Philosophy portion of the first-year course covers logic, general philosophy, and moral philosophy. In Politics, you will be introduced to comparative politics and political sociology, topics in political theory, and a brief module in political science research methods.

Each college organizes its tutorials for these modules differently. I have included in the reading list our plans for first-year tutorials at Lincoln. This schedule is tentative, but hopefully it will give you an idea of what to expect. There are also lectures for each of these modules, which are centrally organized by each department. More information on lecture scheduling will be available closer to the start of term.

We also have attached some reading lists to help you prepare for your first year of study. These readings are not required, but they will enable you to make a confident start to the course, particularly if you have not studied these topics before.

Note that books marked * will be allowed against the college’s book grant scheme. Further information on the scheme will be sent to you at a later date.

You will also be hearing from some of your tutors in the upcoming weeks with further information about preparation and any preliminary work they would like to assign.

We hope you are enjoying the summer, and we look forward to seeing you in October!

Yours sincerely,

Dr Jody LaPorte (Politics, Director of Studies for PPE)

Dr Alex Prescott-Couch (Philosophy)

Dr Aleksei Parakhonyak (Economics)
