Dr Samantha Ege wins American Musicological Society's prestigious Noah Greenberg Award

Dr Samantha Ege has been awarded the American Musicological Society's Noah Greenberg Award for a collaborative recording project called Renaissance Woman: Works by the Women-Composer-Pianist of the Black Chicago Renaissance. On this new album, Dr Ege plays the piano works of Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, Nora Holt, Helen Hagan, and Betty Jackson King, with Oxford-based pianist Thomas Graff assisting her with the two-piano works. For the sleeve notes, Dr Ege is joined by a community of scholars and performers whose combined expertise elucidate the ways in which each composer engaged Black folk influences, Romantic idioms, nationalist overtones, and modern experiments. Her co-writers are performer-scholar Dr Artina McCain and musicologists A. Kori Hill (UNC Chapel Hill) and Dr Lucy Caplan (Harvard). The album will be recorded with Lorelt (Lontano records) under the label's founder, Odaline de la Martinez.

The Noah Greenberg Award is intended as a grant-in-aid stimulate active cooperation between scholars and performers by recognising and fostering outstanding contributions to historical performing practices. Dr Ege and her collaborators are honoured to receive this award.

Dr Samantha Ege is the Lord Crewe Junior Research Fellow in Music. She has been contracted as co-author of Price (Master Musicians Series, Oxford University Press) and co-editor of The Cambridge Companion to Florence B. Price. Her latest album Fantasie Nègre: The Piano Music of Florence Price (Lorelt) has received critical acclaim in The Telegraph, New York Times, and Washington Post.
