In an educational landscape where equal opportunities are paramount, initiatives like the Pathfinders Programme stand out as beacons of hope and possibility. Designed to empower pupils eligible for free school meals in our link regions of Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire, the 4th Pathfinders event on 5 March unfolded with a blend of academic engagement, exploration and inspiration.
Forty Year 9 and 10 students, along with their teachers, were greeted with opportunities to expand their horizons and delve into various fields of study from the moment they stepped foot onto the College grounds. The itinerary was crafted to offer a taste of higher education and university life, all while fostering a sense of belonging and possibility.
Pupils from Lincoln Christ’s Hospital School, The Duston School and Guilsborough Academy started the day with their year groups – learning about psychology and tourism from our partners at the University of Lincoln. They then enjoyed lunch in Hall and a College tour before heading off to workshops at Lincoln College Archives and the Natural History Museum.
Perhaps the most telling testament to the success of the event lies in the feedback received from its participants. With 100% of students reporting having enjoyed the day and 97% felt they had a better understanding of what University might be like.
We are grateful, as ever, to our College staff, our partners at the University of Lincoln, and the teachers of our participating schools for helping make the day such a success.
The 5th Pathfinders event will be held in the University of Lincoln in September 2024 with even more schools taking part.
