Aquinas – Commentary on Sententiae Bk.1. Italy, 13th century. William Chamberlain, Rector donation. Annotated with the only known copy of Aquinas’ second commentary on Sententiae Bk.1.

Treatment:

  • Spine leather lifted at every panel towards upper joint, and at panels 1, 2 and 5 towards lower joint, where it was split. Board leather lifted at these locations.
  • Extended tabs of Japanese Kozo paper pasted to spine where leather lifted, making sure to reincorporate spinefold of loose upper endpaper.
  • Extended tabs of aerocotton pasted over Japanese Kozo paper tabs.
  • Japanese Kozo paper and aerocotton tabs pasted beneath board leather to reinforce lower board attachment and re-attach upper board.
  • Tabs of toned Kozo paper pasted over aerocotton repairs.
  • Leather re-adhered on top of repairs with wheat starch paste.
