Micon’s Ultra Marathon (50km) Adventure

I recently had the unforgettable experience of completing my first 50km ultramarathon in Madeira, Portugal, proudly representing the Lincoln College Running Club (LCRC) alongside two friends who also crossed the finish line. I’m deeply thankful to my friends for their support and to LCRC for covering my race fee, making this milestone achievable.

The day began at 4am, but heavy rain delayed the race until 9am, leaving us uncertain if it would proceed. When it finally started, the course was both breathtaking and grueling, featuring a 2,458m climb and 2,473m descent over technical trails, some paved with cobblestones and others rugged and uneven. Daytime temperatures reached 21°C, dropping to 5–8°C at night. Equipped with my running pack, I pushed hard to stay ahead of the strict 10km section cutoffs.

The route started in São Vicente and followed Madeira’s northern coastline along the historic Caminho Real trail, passing through traditional villages and stunning landscapes. Sharing the path with 110km runners added to the camaraderie. Midway, I ran out of food, but a kind local gave me fruit that kept me going—a gesture I’ll never forget. The encouragement from the community, marshals and fellow runners was invaluable.

Completing my first ultramarathon was humbling, exhilarating, and unforgettable. It blended personal endurance, breathtaking scenery, and the warmth of a supportive community. Madeira will forever hold a special place in my heart.
