Three Lincoln Blues to take part in Varsity Rugby Matches

Three Lincoln Blues students will take part in this year's Varsity Matches, the annual rugby battle between Oxford University Rugby Football Club (OURFC) and Cambridge University Rugby Union Football Club (CURUFC). The Matches will take place on Saturday 8 March at StoneX Stadium in north London - the home of Saracens Rugby Club - with kick off for the women at 12:00pm, and for the men at 3:00pm.

The Varsity is one of the longest runing sporting fixtures in the world, with over 150 years of history. The first men’s match was played in 1872 and the first women’s match was played in 1988. Each year, over 300 players compete to play in a Varsity match.

We're immensely proud of our Lincoln Blues athletes who will be competing this year, including:

Harry Bridgewater (2022, Medicine)

Jack Hamilton (2024, DPhil Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics)

Katie Hains (2022, DPhil Biochemistry)

Katie Hains, #11 wing said, "After not playing last season due to injury, I'm super excited to be back in the mix this year. We have a really exciting team and it's shaping up to be a great day at StoneX. We'd love to have a big crowd of supporters to witness a good old-fashioned shoeing!"

Harry Bridgewater, #15 fullback said, “I’m buzzing for this year’s varsity match against the tabs- having been unsuccessful for two years now, I’m hoping we can bring home the win. The support down at Iffley has been unreal so far this season and any more support on the day would be fantastic. We have worked incredibly hard and the varsity match is both a brilliant day out and an incredible Oxbridge tradition, so make sure to get a ticket and be in the crowd”"

Jack Hamilton, #9 scrum half, said, "It’s always a privilege to pull on the Dark Blue jersey – regardless of the match – but the Varsity definitely has an extra special feel to it. As a World Rugby Hall of Fame event, it is the biggest game that most of us will ever play in. Coming off two consecutive losses, this year’s clash is crucial for us to get right – we are all eager for the opportunity that awaits on March 8."
