A warm welcome to Nigel Clifford, Lincoln's 40th Rector
2 Sep 2024
We’re delighted that Nigel Clifford FRGS, FRSA, FRICS has taken up his post as our 40th Rector. He succeeds Professor Henry Woudhuysen FBA who graced the position for 12 years.
Nigel graduated with a degree in geography from Downing College, Cambridge, (Lincoln’s sister College) and also holds an MBA from Strathclyde University.
He has held senior roles in a number of high-profile organisations, and has been particularly attracted to historic institutions that make a difference to the world. These include leading Glasgow Royal Infirmary, a major group of teaching hospitals affiliated with the University of Glasgow, and the Ordnance Survey, Great Britain’s national mapping agency. In June this year he completed his three-year term as President of the Royal Geographical Society. Between 2018-2023 he served as the Deputy Chair of the UK Government’s first Geospatial Commission within the Cabinet Office, and was also Operating Executive with Marlin Equity Partners.
Nigel is married to Jeanette, whom he met while studying geography together, and they have three adult children. His interests continue to include geography as well as travel, cycling and running.
Nigel said: “I could not be happier to join Lincoln. From all I have heard and seen, the College has a special fusion of high standards, strong attainment and excellent support across many fields, combined with a natural friendliness. I am looking forward to becoming a supportive part of the Lincoln community and meeting many more ‘Lincoln people’ as we look forward to celebrating 600 years of achievement.”
