Global Lincoln
Travel Grants
Thanks in part to the generosity of our alumni, Lincoln is able offer a number of travel grants to students to support trips linked to their studies. These grants open doors for students who wish to enhance their education through travel.
Travel abroad is meaningful and oftentimes critical for our students’ academic research and personal development. Unfortunately, Brexit has caused complications for those wishing to travel to Europe, especially for those hoping to spend a year abroad with their modern languages degree. The paperwork has become very tricky to navigate and it is often difficult to find internships where the company is willing to put in the extra work for students from the UK. Even for exchanges with our partner universities, the delays in visas have sometimes meant that students had to miss out on significant parts of their semesters abroad.
Financially, the students no longer receive Erasmus funding either for university exchanges or internship placements. Turing funding has been somewhat opaque, whereas Erasmus was fairly straightforward and equitable. Supporting travel awards will give both students and tutors the flexibility to navigate these difficult situations. For example, a student could afford a plane ticket to South America where the cost of living could be more affordable once there.
Travel awards start at £25K and can be given over 3 years. They are also given in perpetuity so can be named after the donor or a loved one.

BA, Jurisprudence, 2021
I used my travel grant to visit archives in Frankfurt for my Bridge Essay (thesis) on the depiction of the postwar economic miracle in West German film. I looked at stacks of annotated scripts, letters, newspaper cuttings, etc., which allowed me to make more original comments on the films and debate with other commentators. My work felt much more “real” after working in the archives and talking to the archivists. Besides, it was obviously lovely to be in Germany over Christmas.

BA, Jurisprudence (with Law in Europe ), 2021
Throughout my time at Oxford, I have been keen to take part in mooting to refine my advocacy skills and apply my legal studies. Thanks to the help of the Lincoln travel fund, I was able to compete in a legal “triathlon” in April, taking place in Kent. The competition spanned over one weekend and it involved a mock negotiation, application for a freezing injunction and moot. Overall, the weekend was a success; my competition partner and I finished in first place across all of the activities. Most importantly, I learnt a lot about advocacy and I enjoyed researching the contractual legal issues in depth, as the Oxford law course takes a broader approach and it is hard to thoroughly delve into legal issues with the pace of the course in term time.
Three words to describe Lincoln:
Welcoming, inclusive and supportive.
