Profile

After completing doctoral study at the University of Glasgow, I moved to Oxford in 2010, where I have spent most of my academic career. Aside from periods at the Universities of Warwick and Oxford Brookes, I have held college positions at St Peter's College, Merton, Keble, and Regent's Park. I am now responsible for the design and delivery of short courses for international students at Lincoln, and for providing study skills support for undergraduate students in humanities and social science subjects.

Research

I work on a range of problems in the history of Europe in the high middle ages (c. 1000-1200), with a particular focus on war and urban culture. My first book concerned the involvement of the church in warfare. Since then I have written a series of articles about the ways that urban identity related to other forms of communal identity. I have recently begun a new project on special and sacred weapons in high medieval warfare.
